Tourism HR Canada has released its labour force survey, with some initial employment data for tourism.
After falling by 130,700 between August and September, tourism employment continued its seasonal decline, falling another 38,200 in October.
For the second month in a row, employment losses were concentrated in full-time positions. Over September and October, full-time tourism employment fell by 239,500 while the number of employees working part-time increased by 70,600.
In Oct 2021, the unemployment rate in the tourism sector was at 5.2%, which is 9.3% lower than the rate reported in Oct 2020, and higher than the previous month (September 2021) when the unemployment rate stood at 5.1%. At 5.2%, tourism’s unemployment rate was below Canada’s seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate of 6.0%.
In the broader labour force, the number of unemployed workers decreased by 68,100 this October. Seasonally unadjusted employment increased by only 9,700, and the number of individuals who are not active in the labour force increased by 97,000.
Data is for the week of October 10 to 16. It does not reflect any change in labour market conditions caused by the end of programs such as the Canada Recovery Benefit or Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy.
